Things to Avoid When Working From Home

It may be tempting to just sit on your sofa with a laptop when you work from home. It may be comfortable in the short term but in the long term, you are likely to develop a few issues with your neck, shoulders, wrists, or back. The dining table has become a common home office, but it also does not provide the supportive environment you need to maintain a healthy posture.

Work Station Ergonomics

When you work eight hours a day facing a computer screen, you must have a good chair that provides support for your back. You also need to be at the correct height. Having a chair that is height adjustable can be more supportive. Your feet need to be able to sit flatly on the floor.

You should be looking straight ahead at your computer screen, not looking up or looking down. The keyboard also needs to be at the correct height, so it does not strain your wrists or shoulders. Getting everything to align correctly can take a bit of trial and error but it is necessary to avoid pain and injuries.

Use headphones or speakerphone when you are answering calls. Do not lay the phone on your shoulder and bring your ear to the phone. This can result in painful neck issues. If it is possible, get up and walk around every so often to stretch your legs.
